“Rick and Morty” may see the return Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks. The new trailer for the animated series teased their appearance.
Citadel of Ricks
Adult Swim recently released the second trailer for the new season, which hinted at the return of the Citadel of Ricks. The last time these different versions of Rick appeared was in an episode, titled “Rickshank Rickdemption.” The scientist invaded the Citadel of Ricks during his escape from the Galactic Federation prison.
It seemed that that was the last time fans would see them given how the episode ended. However, the new trailer for season 3 hinted at their return. The preview sees Morty surrounded by versions of his grandfather all fighting each other.
Evil Morty in “Rick and Morty” season 3
The presence of the Citadel of Ricks likewise hints at the return of Evil Morty. After all, the eye-patched teenager first appeared in the episode where the titular characters met their different doppelgangers in season 2. Co-creator Justin Roiland also teased the appearance of the character in a previous tweet, where he shared a piece of concept art for season 3 that featured three versions of the teenager.
The boy on the ground clearly resembles Evil Morty, because of the mischievous look on his face.
Furthermore, a scene from season 3 episode 1 hinted at the return of the character. If you listen closely to the voices in the background, you can hear someone say, “He who controls the pants controls the galaxy." This seems like someone who comes from Evil Morty and not from Rick’s overly anxious grandson.
Moreover, one of the show’s writers talked about the character’s return in an interview with Y Combinator. He hinted at the possibility that fans would see the evil doppelganger again in season 3. “And the fact that anybody cares about characters that were introduced once in season one, and like intriguing ideas, like the eye-patch Morty, who’s the evil Morty, you know, was that character gonna come back?
In season three I think that we stay true to the idea of those,” Ryan Ridley said.
Conflict between the characters in “Rick and Morty” season 3
The second trailer for season 3 also teased conflict happening between the titular characters. The preview shows three different scenes, which could be interpretive of the rumored conflict between the pair. One scene shows the scientist and the teenager as monsters fighting each other. Then there is another that shows Rick eating his grandson. The last scene shows the scientist stabbing Morty. Fans speculate that the teenager will go against his grandfather in the installment after he learns that the latter orchestrated his parents’ divorce.
