Long time viewers can remember the debut of the CBS daytime drama "The Young and the Restless." The show first aired 44 years ago in 1973. In the early days, the soap opera revolved around the Brookes and Foster families. Today there is no trace of the Brookes clan and Jill Atkison is the sole surviving member of the Fosters. Last week CBS renewed the contract for Y&R for three additional years.

The longevity of "The Young and the Restless"

When "The Young and the Restless" had its debut, all three network television channels had numerous daytime drama's on the air at the same time.

CBS began the afternoon with "Love of Life" at 11:30 and several more shows followed until 4:00 p.m. Y&R is the sole surviving daytime television show from that era. "The Bold and the Beautiful" did not come on the scene until 1987.

At a time when daytime dramas are being removed from the small screen, Y&R has continued to pull in ratings and have a loyal audience. Concerned fans who believed the show may be taken off the air can rest easy for 36 more months. CBS actually renewed its entire daytime lineup which includes "The Bold and the Beautiful," "Let's Make a Deal" and "The Talk." CBS also will continue to broadcast "The Price is Right" which airs at 11:00 a.m.

Genoa City continues to rake in the awards for being the best in daytime and give viewers great stories

On June 22 of this year, "The Young and the Restless" won six awards during the 41st Daytime Emmies including the prestigious outstanding daytime drama award. According to CBS, Y&R has been the number one show in daytime for 28 years.

During that time the show has stayed consistent with the Abbot and Newman families. The feuding between Jill and Kay Chancellor also kept things interesting.

For the week beginning July 3, fans of "The Young and the Restless" can continue to expect fireworks. One story is about to get a lot of coverage. Paul is going to question what is going on with Kevin because of his extended absence.

Viewers are aware that Greg Rikkart is leaving the show soon so his and Chloe's storyline will be coming to an end. Spoiler alerts indicate that Kevin will find a way for him and Chloe to ditch the good doctor grab Bella and leave town together.

Spoilers also imply that Jordan may turn to his old friend Chelsea in order to get the goods on Juliet. Perhaps more of their past together may be revealed. Loyal fans should stay tuned for more updates and also continue to keep this award-winning drama number one in daytime on the small screen.
