Kicking off her Reputation Stadium Tour with some drama, Taylor Swift opened up about her feud with Kim Kardashian West and her husband Kanye West. Swift has been silent on the matter since it happened but decided to seemingly dedicate her newest album and tour to tackle the elephant in the room, starting with a heart to heart in the middle of her concert to over 55,000 fans.
The feud's history
It all started in 2016 when Kanye West claimed that the country turned pop singer owes her fame to him in his song "Famous." The rapper went on to allegedly call her a b****, prompting Swift to fight back.
After calling West out for name-calling, Kim Kardashian West came to her husband's defense. The entrepreneur and CFDA award honoree revealed a phone call between West and Swift providing evidence that the singer not only knew about the lyric in the song but had signed off on it.
Later on, Kim Kardashian West tweeted something seemingly directed at Taylor Swift. "Wait it's legit National Snake Day?!?!? They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days," she wrote, following the words with a trial of snake emojis. The incident prompted people to take to social media and express their own thoughts and feelings towards Swift. It wasn't pretty.
No matter how much damage control was done, it was too late for Swift.
The internet branded her a snake and it looked like her reputation was going to take one big hit.
Addressing the elephant in the room
On Tuesday night, Swift launched her Reputation Stadium Tour for her new album in Glendale, Arizona The pop star was not only planning on addressing her infamous nickname but decided to embrace it.
The stage itself was covered in snake symbols: the screen had images of giant snakes, the microphone was a snake, she flew in on a snake platform, even the songs on her new album directly spoke to the feud. None of it is subtle and Swift doesn't plan on backing down any time soon.
Halfway through the concert itself, Swift paused by the piano and started to speak:
“You might be wondering why there are so many snakes everywhere, huh?” she asked.
“A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on," she told the crowd. She didn't mention either Kanye West of Kim Kardashian West by name, as she often avoids using names in these types of situations. "Then a lot of people were calling me a lot of things on social media. And I went through some really low times for a while because of it. I went through some times when I didn’t know if I was going to get to do this anymore,” she continued, "I wanted to send a message to you guys that if someone uses name calling to bully you on social media, and even if a lot of people jump on board with it, that doesn’t have to defeat you. It can strengthen you instead." The crowd cheered as Swift, surrounded by fake giant snakes, continued her speech.
The two-hour concert featured almost every song on “Reputation.” Swift ended with a mash-up of “We are never ever getting back together” and “This is why we can’t have nice things,” another head nod to the feud as the latter song is thought to be directed at West. With one particular line sticking out: “Friends don’t try to trick you, get you on the phone and mind-twist you," it's not hard to see why. The song, however, was not Swift's final head nod to the feud, and it probably won't be her last. As fans started making their way out of the stadium, Swift replaced the snakes on the screens, and left them with one final comment: “In the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive.”
As of the publishing of this article, no word has come from either Kim Kardashian West or her husband Kanye West.
One concert tour, two feuds back in the limelight
In addition to the Kardashian/West drama, Swift also brought her feud with Katy Perry to everyone's attention. The feud started a long time ago, but it was only brought to light during an interview with Rolling Stone that Swift did in 2014. In it, the pop star talked about her confusion as to where she and Katy Perry stood with each other, saying that she didn't know if they were friends or not. Then, it all became clear when the other pop megastar allegedly tried to sabotage an arena tour of Swift's and that seemed to be the last straw. Since then, the two have been publically avoidant of each other and, as Swift put it in her interview, "straight up enemies." So when she posted on Instagram about Katy Perry, it was soon taken notice.
This time, however, it was an ending to the feud. She shared a photo on of a gift she got before she went on stage from Perry: an olive branch.
Maybe Perry saw what going against Taylor Swift got Kim Kardashian West or maybe it was just time to move on, but at least one feud with has been put to bed on Swift's Reputation Stadium Tour.
