One of the most exciting things about "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is the introduction of interesting new characters. People are already looking forward to meeting Rose, the young girl who will be helping Finn in the highly anticipated sequel. However, fans seem to be more focused on the mysterious DJ who will be played by Benicio del Toro.
The identity of DJ is still a mystery. According to director Rian Johnson, the character's name is not even close to the moniker that has been released to public knowledge. So what exactly is the role Benicio del Toro will play in "Star Wars 8?" Some believe that DJ could be the new trilogy's answer to the late Han Solo.
Will 'Episode 8' introduce a new Han Solo?
Fans are still mourning the death of Han Solo in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The beloved captain of the Millennium Falcon was killed by his own son Kylo Ren, a tragedy that led to people wondering if there would be a new character who might live up to Han's infamy. Although there have been speculations that Poe Dameron will eventually become the new Solo, the new details about DJ seem to suggest that the mysterious character might be a suitable candidate.
According to Comicbook, a new one-shot comic book tied to "Star Wars 8" will focus on DJ. Ben Blacker, who co-wrote the comics, has revealed that Benicio del Toro's character might have several similarities with Han.
"You’ll definitely get some insights into DJ’s worldview, which is a more complicated and, in many ways, darker perspective than we’ve seen in the 'Star Wars' universe," Blacker stated. Naturally, fans began speculating that the character is being styled to be the cross between Han and Boba Fett.
Will he side with the Alliance or work for the First Order in "Episode 8?"
Is DJ a possible new villain?
Ben Blacker also teased on DJ being different from the other people in the franchise, calling him "crafty and more than a bit mercenary." The description sounds a lot like Boba Fett, who had famously acquired Han Solo for Jabba the Hutt.
Interestingly, one of DJ's only leaked lines from "The Last Jedi" happens to be "Oh, for Hutt's sake."
But could this mean Benicio del Toro will turn in a villainous performance? Will he be the one to reunite Finn with Rey? Lucasfilm continues to be extremely secretive about the character so fans might need to wait until the premiere of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." The film will hit theaters on December 15.
