“Rick and Morty” Season 3 might explore the beloved blue alien Mr. Meeseeks' origin. Co-showrunner Dan Harmon and writer Ryan Ridley may have teased which episode or possible storyline the blue alien appears in.
Here’s to more 'I’m Mr. Meeseeks, Look at me!'
Dan Harmon talked about his plans for the return of Mr. Meeseeks (voiced by co-creator Justin Roiland) during last year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
He admitted that they, or the writers, have yet to find a suitable episode to put the character in. However, he already has an idea in mind that involves a play at a classic American TV series.
According to Slashfilm, Harmon said that he plans to put the character in a spoof episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” He did not share further details about the alien’s appearance in “Rick and Morty” Season 3 but said that Mr. Meeseeks’ return should appeal to a first time viewer. “As long as it tracks for a first time viewer, oh, I guess that’s some kind of guy that says, ‘I’m Mr. Meeseeks’ and does his thing,” Harmon said.
How will Mr. Meeseeks appear?
The 1990’s “Star Trek” series features several aliens so it is unclear how Harmon plans to differentiate or put emphasis on Mr. Meeseeks. It is likely that he introduces the character in a spoof episode from Season 4 when the USS Enterprise discovered a new alien race.
Coincidentally, writer Ryan Ridley, who wrote the Mr. Meeseeks story for Season 1, may have hinted at this episode in a podcast interview (see video below). He confirmed that there have been talks of bringing the alien back. He also revealed that if the character does return then it would show a different story. This time it would focus on his origin, as opposed to Season 1 when all he did was obey orders.
“We’d want to really explore a different aspect of it, but that’s one way to do it, right there, is show what the inside of a Meeseeks box looks like,” Ridley said.
Harmon insists on Mr. Meeseeks’ return
This is not the first time that the showrunner had expressed interest to bring the character back. During a panel interview at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, he made a personal promise to bring the alien back in Season 3. He also explained why Mr. Meeseeks was not in Season 2 and it was because there was a restriction in bringing Season 1 characters to the installment. The new season would be different though since it would include more callbacks.
Regardless, fans will have to find out for sure if Mr. Meeseeks does appear in “Rick and Morty” Season 3 when the show returns this summer. Harmon wants the alien to return and being the showrunner, then he might just get his way.
