Way before Doomfist arrived in “Overwatch,” fans were already rooting for actor Terry Crews. They want him to voice the new character of the hit shooter game. But unfortunately, that did not happen.
Blizzard went on a new direction, despite the campaign from the community and Crews himself. Doomfist is being voiced in “Overwatch” by none other than Sahr Ngaujah. Interestingly, the studio explained the real score behind the casting.
Why the hero is voiced by a different actor
Crews revealed his own take as to why it was only right for the company to not side him. He explained that the studio had a different vision, a unique on its own kind. For him, voicing Doomfist would have messed things up.
“I don’t wanna be the guy that hijacks a game,” he said in an interview with PC Gamer.
This made fans fall in love with his charm, as they think Crews is such a cool guy. Interestingly, Crews mentioned about the possibility of him working with the video game company for the game. This remains to be a mystery, though.
According to PVP Live, “Overwatch” lead writer Michael Chu explained Blizzard’s decision in regards to casting Ngaujah instead of Crews.
He said that the decision sprung from their aim to find “something very specific” given the Doomfist’s role in the game. Chu remembered the first time they heard Ngaujah, he blew them away immediately.
“Once we heard his voice, it was like, ‘Holy crap. That’s Doomfist,” he said.
Chu further added that Sahr’s ethnicity made him all the more a perfect fitting for the character. Remember, the 25th character in the game also hails from Nigeria.
Sahr makes a lot more sense
There is no doubt that Crews would have been a great Doomfist voice actor in “Overwatch.” He has proven himself to be a great Hollywood artist anyway. However, the new character is more about having a serious personality and a villainous aura.
This is not take anything from Crews, but somehow, Ngaujah’s voice seems to complement the hero’s overall characteristics. Well, this is not really a surprise, as fans probably know this by now.
In related news, the “Overwatch” developers revealed some interesting things about the game during their presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. They talked about their plans of adding more support heroes.
As a matter of fact, they already have “a bunch of prototypes in place,” all playing in different mechanics. This is definitely an interesting sight to see in the game. But for now, their identities and release dates remain to be uncertain.
