On February 5, it was announced to the public that a Michigan couple with 13 sons was expecting a 14th child in April. A report by the Daily Mail stated that the expectant parents did not want to know the gender of the baby before its birth. Jay and Kateri Schwandt would have loved to have had a girl to be among all those boys, but Kateri gave birth to the couple's 14th son on Wednesday, April 18. She is not surprised by the number of Children she has had because she is one of 14 siblings herself. She is surprised that all her children are all boys though.

About the baby

The Michigan couple says this will be their last child, but that's what they said after the 13th son was born. Their new baby weighed in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces and is 21 inches long. The baby boy, who arrived five days early, has not been named. He joins his older brothers Tyler, 24, Zach, 21, Drew, 20, Brandon, 18, Tommy, 15, Vinnie, 14, Calvin, 12, Gabe, 10, Wesley, eight, Charlie, seven, Luke, five, Tucker, four, and the youngest is two.

When NBC News anchor Lester Holt reported this story on "Nightly News" on Thursday (April 19), he said the odds of this happening is less than 0.2 percent.

Reaction of the parents

The Rockford, Michigan couple said that adding another child to their Large Family wouldn't make that much difference and would not add too much of a financial burden on them. Kateri said she is used to large families because she grew up with 13 siblings. Most parents won't agree with her after she said having 10 children is the same as having three.

She did say there is more noise and there is more chaos around the house, but she and her husband are used to having a large family.

The Schwandts said they are going to enjoy their new son as if they didn't have 13 older ones. They also said they could not imagine their household without having the boys in it.

Trivia about 14 boys

On a baseball team, there are 25 players, but there are only nine positions. A football team can have only 11 players on the field at any one time. They could make up almost three basketball teams with five players from each team on the court at one time. A soccer team has 11 players on the field at any one time with up to six substitutes on the bench. Of course, the father could coach them in the sports they choose.

All of them won't fit into the average vehicle. A carton with only a dozen eggs won't be enough, but there are cartons with 18 eggs. It wasn't noted in any of the reports, but it would be interesting to know if all 12 months of the year are represented. It is a given that more than one child has a birthday in the same month.
