Microsoft finally unveiled its latest console during an E3 press conference on Sunday, initially called Xbox Project Scorpio, now officially known as Xbox One X. People who have $499 to spare can get their own One X and decide whether or not if it’s “the world’s most powerful console ever” when the gaming device arrives on Nov. 7 this year.
The latest console is the smallest Xbox device; however, it will boast 6 teraflops of graphical power, more than the PlayStation 4 Pro which only has 4.2 teraflops.
It also has up to 12GB of RAM with 326GB/s of memory bandwidth.
Backward compatibility
Perhaps the most notable feature the Xbox One X has is its backward compatibility. This means the new console will be able to run existing Xbox One games along with accessories without the need of extra software and updates. So if you have a lot of old Xbox One games just lying around, you will still be able to enjoy them if you decide to upgrade to the One X.
In addition, Microsoft reportedly promised that it will help bring 4K upgrades to several Xbox games such as “Killer Instinct,” “Halo Wars 2,” “Minecraft” and “Gears of Wars,” just to name a few.
Don’t have a 4K TV yet? No problem
Great news for would-be owners of the One X, they don’t need a 4K TV to experience the new video quality of the console due to a thing called “supersampling.” This means the games will still look a lot better even they are using an old TV with a 1080p display.
With the console’s features, Microsoft is looking to make it a lot more viable in the future before the eventual release of its official next-generation Xbox.
What about virtual reality?
Microsoft did share a lot of specs and features of the new console but remained surprisingly quiet regarding the future of virtual reality on the One X, according to reports.
It’s an unusual move by the company considering its main competitor, Sony, has been making significant plays with its PlayStation VR devices.
In fact, Sony recently announced that it sold more than one million headsets globally since it was launched in October of last year. Microsoft already claims that the new console is VR-compatible but people will have to wait for further announcements from the tech giant in the future.
