The Alcatel Idol 5 has received the approval of U.S. regulatory body Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and is a step closer to its release in the country. It is rumored that the mid-range smartphone may head to U.S. carrier Cricket Wireless. The FCC certification for Alcatel Idol 5 displayed the phone’s model number as “6060C.” It received certification under FCC ID, 2ACCJA021.

The Alcatel Idol 5 may be made available to Cricket Wireless prepaid customers.

Two variants of the smartphone

For the unfamiliar, the impending smartphone may come in two different variants. Out of the two, one model – presumably the Alcatel Idol 5S – may house an octa-core MediaTeK MT6757CH processor, which clocks at 2.3 GHz. This variant may also include the Mali-T880 GPU along and 2 GB of RAM.

On the other hand, the second model rumored to be the Idol 5 may come with an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, clocked at 2 GHz and 3 GB of RAM, as well as Adreno 506 GPU. While the Idol 5S may come with a slightly faster chipset, it will offer less RAM capacity.

The Snapdragon 625 powered variant of the Alcatel smartphone is the one to have received the green signal from FCC. Therefore, Cricket Wireless will likely release this variant first.

Idol 5: rumored specs and features

According to a listing on benchmarking site GFXBench where the smartphone was spotted, the Idol 5 may come with a 5.2-inch full HD screen (1,080 x 1,920 pixels resolution). The GFXBench listing also revealed that the Alcatel smartphone may also come with 32 GB onboard storage.

The handset will reportedly be equipped with a 12MP primary camera and an 8MP secondary snapper. The phone may also come with Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. As of now, information regarding price and launch date of the handset are not known.

Alcatel A30 tablet on T-Mobile

Alcatel other than securing FCC approval for its Idol 5 also released a new tablet dubbed the Alcatel A30 on T-Mobile. This tablet is a mid-range offering and is targeted at budget conscious buyers eyeing a robust device. The tablet sports an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

The device houses a quad-core Snapdragon processor but the company has not revealed which one. It only stated that the device comes with a “dependable” Qualcomm CPU. The Alcatel tablet will come pre-loaded with the latest Android 7.1 Nougat. The budget buy is priced at an inexpensive $125 and can be purchased from the carrier. Consumers will be able to take advantage of T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network speeds on the device.
