Kyrie Irving’s request for a trade did not only shock the entire Cleveland Cavaliers community. It also affected some of the players in the league. They just cannot fathom the point guard’s decision. After all, he was significant in bringing the team into three straight NBA finals.
According to Sports Illustrated, the Washington Wizards superstar John Wall shared this two cents about Kyrie Irving’s decision to leave. This was after he agreed to an extension that would keep him as Washington’s guard through the 2022-23 season. Here is everything about it in a nutshell.
Wall on Irving’s trade fiasco
It holds true that Wall has never been into finals, but surely, he hopes to make it there one day. Irving and the Cavaliers, on the other hand, went thrice already. But unlike Irving, Wall is the main guy of the Wizards. He is the focal point, the franchise’s centerpiece. Sadly for the Cleveland guard, this is not a position he can acquire – not with LeBron James on it. But of course, whichever path he goes to, there is always pros and cons. If he decides to stay in Cleveland, he is likely to win another championship. If he goes to another team and be the main guy, a champion run is almost impossible.
In a conference held for his extension, Wall was asked about his stance involving the Kyrie Irving trade.
“That was crazy to me. I didn’t know that was happening at all,” he said. Wall understood that Irving is in a very “tough” situation. But for him, if he is to go to the NBA finals for three times, he will stay. Wall, however, gave Irving the benefit of the doubt. He explained that he was not in the position to say which is right.
After all, like anyone in this world, he does not know exactly what has happened between Irving and the Cavaliers. “You never know what type of relationship or what type of details they have going on the backside,” Wall pointed out.
Wall understands how it is to be a focal point
Well, he sure does, as he is the main guy of the Washington Wizards.
Wall said that he cannot really blame Kyrie Irving, as he is just among the young guys who want to make a name out of themselves. Wall pointed out that Irving, like the new ones today, simply wants to be the main guy. Wall also explained that playing alongside a superstar like LeBron James is an entirely different situation. Anyone who plays with him will automatically become second.
Wall was then asked by a reporter if the Cavs' power would be weakened after Kyrie Irving's departure. The All-Star guard did not take the bait and said that such thing was far from reality. No one in the league knows what the team is up to and who they will be getting from an Irving trade.
