Just recently, news broke out that Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics. His arrival would mean the departure of Isaiah Thomas, Ante Zizic, Jae Crowder, and Brooklyn Nets unprotected 2018 first round pick. Many were glad, but some were saddened by the news.
Perhaps those who got upset were surprised with the package needed to acquire Kyrie Irving. Well, actually, it is just how valuable the All-Star point guard is. After all, he had championship experience and won a title already. But just how significant can he be in a Boston Celtics jersey?
What can he really bring to the table?
His handling skills
First and foremost, ball handling is what separates Irving from the other NBA point guards. He just knows how to make magic using the ball. His efficiency in ball handling is incredible that defenders find it hard to anticipate his moves. Sure, the Celtics had its fun with Thomas, but he is no Irving. The former Cleveland Cavaliers superstar had proven himself to be one of the league’s best player when it comes to ball handling.
Also, this skill makes Kyrie Irving a threat on the floor. He can easily deceive opponents, making their defense a joke. But for this to be effective in Boston, the team needs to adjust to Irving’s gameplay. Remember that in Cleveland, his ball handling tactic worked like magic due to isolation.
The team gave Irving the space to fancy dribble the ball and take it to the hoop.
His explosiveness
It holds true that Kyrie Irving is not as explosive as other point guards such as Derrick Rose (during his prime). However, he has the right amount of it to go straight to the basket. He tends to draw the defender’s attention with some fancy dribbling, but all of a sudden, he will go straight to the hoop.
Boston, on the other hand, did not have the kind of player on the roster. So obviously, they did not introduce any back-up plays that would complement such gameplay.
With Irving, the Celtics team will have to once again adjust. Players must be ready for the typical pick-and-roll, just in case Irving decides to pass the ball.
Three pointers must be in their right position, as Irving could possibly hand them the ball. Irving’s ability to drive straight to the basket at an incredible speed is so fascinating. His effectiveness does not stop there though. With his explosiveness, he can draw the attention of the defenders. From there, he can map two plays: go straight to the basket and score or pass the ball to his teammates.
