John McCain is in a battle for his life, yet all that is being talked about today is how the Senator from Arizona doesn't want President Donald Trump at his funeral. For some reason, McCain shared these wishes with family and friends, and it has turned into morbid headline news.
Today Senator Orrin Hatch weighs in on this funeral wish coming from McCain, and this topic seems to be taking on a life of its own in the headlines.
According to Politico, Hatch believes McCain should change his tune and let Trump come to his funeral.
What about Trump?
Donald Trump seems to be taking the high road when it comes to this very sick and morbid headline news, he's completely ignored McCain's request. The White House has been notified of McCain's wishes, which include keeping Trump away from his funeral and inviting Mike Pence to attend.
Hatch, who is a Republican Senator from Utah, did say that McCain should have his wishes met for his funeral, but he thinks McCain should reconsider. Hatch goes on to say that after all "he's the president of the United States and he's a very good man."
No love lost between the two
It is apparent that McCain doesn't hold the same sentiments toward Trump that Hatch does.
There's a lot of muddy water that's gone under the bridge between Trump and McCain. Despite Hatch holding on to hope that McCain will someday be able to return to Washington, he admits he has heard that is probably not going to be the case.
Using funeral as a move against Trump
Despite the fact that McCain is ill, and it is his funeral they are talking about, he is under fire for using his funeral as a move against Trump. The news of McCain's wish for Trump not to attend his funeral was leaked by those close to McCain as these are folks who were privy to his funeral arrangements.
Polarized debate
As soon as that funeral news was leaked, it started a polarized debate among politicians, journalists, and social media users.
According to the Huffington Post, this is being seen as "ridiculous" by Hatch today. The media site also suggests that McCain has shown "wrath" for Trump in his up and coming memoir.
Hatch's thoughts about McCain needing to invite Trump to his funeral are just the opposite of Congressman Gregory Meeks, who believes that McCain is asking Trump to stay away because he's not going to be a hypocrite.
Moral authority in question?
Meeks said that McCain doesn't believe that Trump has the type of moral authority that a president of this nation should have. With that said, so as not to be a hypocrite, McCain doesn't want him at his funeral.
McCain's wishes for Trump not to attend his funeral sounds almost like an attempt to set up Trump for scrutiny once that day comes. The entire topic is morbid and not something that needs to be thrown into the headlines today.
