Ebony Maw of the Black Order
One particular speculation swirling among the fans is that Lawlor is the member of Thanos’ Black Order named Ebony Maw.
This supervillain team was confirmed to be in the Infinity War during Marvel’s San Diego Comic Con panel. The confirmation was accompanied by the reveal of full-sized statues of each Black Order members.
In the comic books, Ebony Maw was one of the Mad Titan’s followers tasked to destroy Doctor Strange. He is not someone to be trifled with, for he is powerful enough that at one point in the comic books, he managed to take control of Doctor Strange, forcing him to summon the Great Old Shuma Gorath.
The set image of Lawlor pinning down Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange supports the speculation regarding his mystery role. According to the actor, the power of social media and its potential for leaks made Marvel more vigilant of the details and want to make sure that it goes out when they are finally ready. The security that involved many waivers and documents were a necessary precaution since they did not know Lawlor prior to him landing the role.
