A newborn baby girl was abandoned outside a Texas apartment and when found by a resident in the area, the infant was Covered in ants and dirt. The father of the baby said he did not know the infant’s mother was pregnant.

The baby was just born less than an hour before being placed in the bushes. The resident who found the baby was on his way to work when he heard a crying baby.

Man who found baby thought it was a cat

Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland said in a statement to the New York Daily News, the man first heard a murmur and then a cry. He initially thought it was a cat but when he looked into the bushes, he was surprise to find a baby.

The baby still had her umbilical cord attached when she was found.

One of the people who witnessed how the baby was taken by authorities after she was found, identified as Roger Coreas, said he was in shock because a hospital is near the apartment complex.

The baby was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital and is recovering well. It remains unknown whether the baby will stay with a family member or be turned over to the Child Protective Services. A hearing will determine who will have custody of the child.

How authorities found the mother

The policemen working on the case said that they were able to locate the mother of the child after they followed a trail of blood. Two people answered the door and claimed they were not aware of the incident.

Eventually, the baby's mother, a 21-year-old unidentified woman, confessed to abandoning the child after she gave birth to her.

Authorities searched the apartment of the woman and said that they found evidence that the baby was really born inside the apartment and was taken outside then placed on the bushes unattended.

The mother was taken to a local hospital but has since checked out.

She will possibly face charges for abandoning her child. The reason of the mother as to why she abandoned her baby remained unknown.

Gilliland thanked the neighbor because if he did not hear the baby’s cries or did not give much thought about checking what was making the sound, the baby would have died. Gilliland called the discovery a miracle.

Baby’s father will not be charged

The father of the baby girl claimed he did not know the mother of the child was pregnant, Chron reported. The mother reportedly denied being pregnant but he had inklings that she was. The father is also set to undergo a DNA test to determine whether or not he is the baby’s father. He will most likely not be charged.
