There are different types of depressions, including a subtype of depression called Seasonal depression. In this type, the direct relationship between seasonal changes (spring and autumn fundamentally) with changes in mood is evident. It is a type of mood disorder that occurs in some susceptible people and is not the most frequent.
How does the season influence depression?
In some Nordic countries, Seasonal Depression is more frequent because of the few hours of light they have.
In that sense, in the Mediterranean countries, where people enjoy much more hours of light, has less relevance. In these depressions, there are alterations in brain neurotransmitters that can be corrected Pharmacologically.
It also depends on the personality; some people are susceptible to changes in time without being directly depressed. However, that does affect their mood depending on whether it rains or if it is cloudy.
How to differentiate a depression from a low morale or rejection
A person may be sad for a reason, and there is usually a proportionality between how sad he or she is and the reason that has generated it.
In depression there is no proportionality and sadness is immense and does not appear to be commensurate.
The depression comes to have so much intensity that one gets to lose the possibility of enjoying what was enjoyed before. Ideas of suicide may appear, and if that happens, it is an alarming factor.
Tips for family members living with depressed people
Living with a someone affected by depression is a grim situation. Coexistence is not comfortable. Whatever you do to encourage the patient, it is almost impossible to help him or her with good advice and medical support. This type of patients presents two major symptoms: Anhedonia (lack of pleasure or loss of illusion) and sadness.
Firstly, it must be understood that this state of mind may not respond to an external justification and that a person may be depressed even if he or she has no economic or social problems.
You should not say things like "cheer up": it'd be like telling a person who cannot walk to do so. It should be taken as something serious and not as a disease of the unemployed, weak or vague.
Depression in children and teenagers
The clinical manifestations of depression in children and youngsters are different than in adults. For a grown individual, depression occurs in sadness, crying, loss of delusion or enjoyment, while in children and teenagers is manifested by other types of elements (isolation in school or lack of academic achievement to be among them).
