The Top 5 signal callers in NCAA quarterback rankings contain some surprise names

When looking at ESPN's QBR rankings, there are some names like Marcus McMaryion and some teams near the top that may surprise.

When you are talking about the highest rated quarterbacks in college football, there are some names you obviously know and some you're likely to be a bit surprised by. ESPN's QBR rankings show the top five names, as detailed below.

Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama)

Just a true sophomore, this isn't a name that should shock anyone. He's at the top of ESPN's QBR rankings with a score of 97.5. Tua has completed 70 percent of his passes for over 2,000 yards but that's not what's really impressive. The fact that he's thrown 25 touchdown passes and no interceptions is unheard of in today's game.

Kyler Murray (Oklahoma)

The first year starter for Oklahoma comes in second with a QBR of 96.9 thanks to an even better 72.3 completion percentage and 25 touchdowns of his own. He does have three interceptions but he's also doing damage on the ground with 428 yards and five touchdowns. Tua has not needed to run much so far this season.

Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State)

OSU quarterback Dwayne Haskins is having a monster season. He's got an 83.9 QBR thanks to completing 71.1 percent of his passes for 30 touchdowns. He does have five interceptions and he's not a threat on the ground. That would be why his QBR is so much lower than Tua and Murray.

Marcus McMaryion (Fresno State)

McMaryion is the first surprise in the QBR rankings. The Fresno State quarterback has led his team to a 6-1 record thanks to a QBR of 82.4. The former Oregon State Beaver has managed this thanks to 70 percent completion percentage as well as 14 touchdown passes and just two interceptions. He's not a huge threat on the ground, rushing for just over 100 yards. But he has been effective when he carries as he's scored seven touchdowns.

Nathan Rourke (Ohio)

Rourke is the other surprise in these rankings. He's boasting a QBR of 82.4 thanks in large part to completing 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,490 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. He's also run for 492 yards and four touchdowns.
