NBA Power rankings 2018: Top 5 teams early in the season

The NBA season is barely a week old, but several teams have distanced themselves from the rest.

The new NBA season is just four or five games deep for most of the teams as of Wednesday (October 24). However, there are a number of early contenders based on remaining undefeated. Below is a look at which five teams are ahead of the rest, so far, in the early going. Keep in mind, this is no disrespect to the world champions, they just have an early blemish on their record.

1

Denver Nuggets 4-0

A 100-98 statement win, at home, over the Golden State Warriors, helped Denver claim the top spot in the early going. Don't get too excited, yet, as there are 78 more games on their schedule. The Nuggets' other wins came against non-contenders like Sacramento and Phoenix, as well as a sort of contending Los Angeles Clippers team. However, the team has shown balanced scoring and multiple weapons, on the court, so far.

2

Toronto Raptors 4-0

Just a notch below Denver, is the best team in the Eastern Conference. Kawhi Leonard has made his presence felt, immediately, on this team, and Kyle Lowry has been doing great, at the point, with double-digit assists in multiple games. Among Toronto's wins was an early preview of their potential playoff matchup with Boston. DeMar who?

3

New Orleans Pelicans (3-0)

It's a new season, and Anthony Davis continues to wreak havoc on the court. The Pelicans scored a major season-opening road win at Houston, 131-112, to make their statement. Now, they'll need to continue to show they can hang with the best of the league. It seems they can, based on Davis' all-around skills and the help he's getting from teammates.

4

Golden State Warriors (3-1)

The reigning NBA Champions have won three of their first four games (Suns, Jazz, and Thunder) to open the season. Their sole loss came, on the road, by just two points, to a tough Denver Nuggets team. So far, Denver has established itself as a solid team to beat in the West, but the Warriors remain the true champions. Give it some time, but they should regain their form.

5

Milwaukee Bucks (3-0)

The Bucks are getting consistently great numbers from the Greek Freak. As he continues to dominate on the court, the team continues to win and has started out hot. Among their victories, was a one-point win at Charlotte, and a double-digit win over Victor Oladipo and the Pacers. The Bucks could be a force in the East come playoff time.
