The American Technology Council, an advisory group established by President Donald Trump on May 1, is scheduled to meet at the White House later this month in a meeting led by Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner. The group consists of government officials and the great minds of Silicon Valley to help the current administration modernize government services.
The Summit
According to Bloomberg Technology, the meeting schedule for the American Technology Council is planned to be broken down into a large gathering of top executives followed by smaller sessions to discuss specific topics. This first inaugural meeting at the White House, to be led by Jared Kushner, is planned to include some 30 American organizations.
Reportedly, at least eleven companies have been invited to participate, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Oracle Co-CEO Safra Catz, and the Executive Chairman of Alphabet, Eric Schmidt. The representatives will be meeting just a few weeks after many tech chiefs publicly severed ties with the President over his latest decision to exit the Paris climate deal.
Agenda of two gatherings
The event’s main agenda is set to take place on June 19, when the new American Technology Council will meet to discuss ways to modernize the government and the services it offers. This first meeting will be attended by the chief executives of top Silicon Valley companies, including Intel, and possibly Facebook, Adobe, Akamai, Qualcomm, and Google.
According to Bloomberg Technology, the first gathering will likely include discussions surrounding cloud computing and policy changes.
A few days later, on June 22, another gathering will focus on discussing a different set of issues. According to Recode, the second gathering will likely cover topics related to drones, the Internet of Things, driver-less cars, 5G wireless technologies, and possibly investments within the sectors.
The second gathering is organized by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and led by the deputy chief technology officer Michael Kratsios.
The American Tech Council
Before his inauguration, Trump held his first meeting with a group of tech executives to discuss trade, jobs, immigration, and Chinese relations. During the pre-inauguration gathering, which was then attended by Tesla founder Elon Musk, Trump met with the group of tech industry elite for an intimate discussion. This same group was then formally turned into a tech council through an executive order signed by the President on May 1. Since then, Elon Musk has reportedly told the press that he was leaving his positions on the three presidential councils he served in after the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.
