Water resistance is now a common feature in most premium smartphones that are launched in the tech market. Similarly, Samsung’s newly launched flagships – Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy S8 – also come with IP68 water resistance and dust proof certifications. So, the users of the Samsung flagship duo need not worry about their phone getting wet in the rain or accidentally falling into a puddle of water, as the South Korean OEM guarantees that no harm will come to the handset.
But, is that guarantee applicable for all kinds of liquids? Everything wet need not be water and technically, Samsung guarantees protection only from water. So what would happen if the phone came into contact with something other liquid? Nothing good apparently, as the chemical composition of other liquids differ from H20 and they may react negatively with Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Why other liquids differ from water
Other than water, most liquids have some other compounds dissolved in them, which may not go well with the smartphone. Both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ might be protected against ill effects of tap water.
However, other types such as hot or distilled water may damage the Samsung flagship if exposed to them for a long period. This may happen due to the fact that distilled water does not contain any minerals or salts and might get inside places, normal or regular cannot. Hot water, on the other hand, can melt or loosen gaskets and adhesives of the smartphone.
Other liquids like anti-freeze or beer may have certain chemicals dissolved in them that can infiltrate the water resistant barriers of the handset. The chemicals can also damage the SIM card slots, speaker holes, or headphone jack of the smartphone. If by accident, your phone does come in contact with any other liquid apart from plain water, it would be wise to first dry the device and take it to an authorized service center as soon as possible.
Do not insert foreign objects
It is also advisable not to insert any foreign objects like sewing needles or toothpicks inside the nooks and corners of the smartphone to make the liquid flow out, as it may further damage the handset. It is better to wipe the smartphone with a clean dry cloth and get any sticky components out of the crannies of the handset with the help of a brush.
Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ water resistance test
The IP68 certification indicates that the smartphone duo is water resistant up to 1.5 meters or 4.92 feet for a time span of 30 minutes. EverythingApplePro conducted some water tests on Galaxy S8 in 3 feet of water for 3 minutes and it looked like both the devices were working fine after the tests. So it is safe to say that the Samsung flagships are safe when it comes to normal water, but one has to be careful for other liquids.
