The Nebraska football team is looking to finish the 2019 recruiting class as strong as possible. One way they could do that would be to get legacy prospect Eugene Asante into the fold. The 4-star linebacker took a step closer to that being a reality when he announced his final five on Wednesday afternoon.
Nebraska football in the mix
Asante is one of the most sought after players in the 2019 class, thanks in large part to his being one of the only 4-star prospects that isn't signed with a team just yet.
Asante wasn't all that highly sought after until the early signing day came and went. Now schools like the Huskers are looking to wrap up their recruiting class with one final grab.
Asante announced his final five on his Twitter account the while Scott Frost and company have to be happy to have made the cut, they have one heck of an uphill battle to fight if they are going to get the younger brother of Larry Asante in Lincoln. In addition to the Cornhuskers, Asante named Maryland, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Florida State.
Eugene Asante leaning to Seminoles?
At the moment, it appears the Seminoles are going to be the team the Huskers need to look out for.
Some of that is because FSU is the last team he visited. Some of that is because Florida State is always going to be a school that is going to be a lure for players, even if the team has fallen on hard times.
Hailing from Chantilly, Virginia, it's interesting that the Nebraska football team is in play for Eugene Asante. It's a safe bet that had his brother not played in Lincoln, the Huskers wouldn't be getting a second look. That means Scott Frost and company are a bit of a long shot. It could also mean they have the trump card.
Asante is the eighth-ranked player in the state of Virginia, according to 247Sports composite rankings. He's also the 17th best outside linebacker in the entire 2019 class.
He's also the 282nd ranked player overall. It's no wonder teams like UCLA and Florida State turned on the full court press.
The Seminoles are one of the latest teams to come calling and they've come calling in a big way. It doesn't mean they are going to win out in the end. Eugene Asante took an official visit to UCLA earlier this month and the Bruins are not in the linebacker's top five teams.
This weekend, he will be checking out a school that made the cut in North Carolina. That's not great news for the Nebraska football team either as national signing day is next Wednesday. The Huskers will have to hope they can stay in the running after what will likely be a visit the Tar Heels will pull out all the stops for.
