The Cleveland Cavaliers are in a relatively bad situation this season as they are struggling to win games consistently. They are supposed to be the second-best team in the entire NBA, yet their record is good enough for only the third place in the East. Even though their roster has been plagued by injuries, the Cavaliers have performed poorly even when they were healthy.
The Cavaliers lost one of their best players, Kyrie Irving, in August last year.
Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and a pair of draft picks. One of those draft picks is the draft pick that was originally acquired by the Brooklyn Nets, and it turns out that this pick is the most valuable trade asset Cleveland owns at the moment. If the rumors are true, the team will use it to acquire a superstar later this year.
Draft pick for a superstar
Considering that their season isn't going really well, the Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to make a big trade and improve their roster before the trade deadline. However, in order to trade for a big-name player, the Cavaliers will most likely have to use their first-round draft pick.
However, it appears that the pick won't be used in any trades as Cleveland is going to use it to get a superstar next summer.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski recently talked on “Outside the Lines” and made it clear that the Cavaliers do not intend to use their pick on DeAndre Jordan. Many fans and experts predicted that Cleveland would use the draft pick, but it appears that it is not going to happen. The Cavaliers simply don't consider Jordan valuable enough to trade their draft pick for him.
However, it appears that the Cavaliers are willing to trade their draft pick for Paul George. George will be one of the top free agents this summer, and considering how bad the Oklahoma City Thunder are doing this week, it won't be surprising if he decides to sign with another team.
The Cavaliers wanted to trade for George last summer, but the Pacers didn't want to trade him to Cleveland. Could he finally join the team this year?
LeBron James and Paul George
Just like Paul George, LeBron James will be a free agent next summer. The Cavaliers will try to use their draft pick to lure George, and if they sign him, it will be much easier to convince James to re-sign with them. However, if things go wrong, the Cavaliers might have to use the pick themselves and draft the player they can rebuild around.
