In June, Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook won the 2017 NBA MVP award. The celebration gave way for Kevin Durant to send a congratulatory message to his former teammate. We all know that things have not been well with the duo since Durant decided to leave for Oakland. Things have been rough, and Westbrook didn't quite appreciate the move. Since then, their rivalry escalated from fierce on-court battle to throwing jabs during interviews.
Kevin Durant reaches out
Recently, Westbrook's former teammate Kendrick Perkins revealed, Durant sent a message to Westbrook congratulating him. Talking to Sports Illustrated, Perkins said: "I know they had talked right after they announced Russ won MVP. They texted. I think they broke the ice." Perkins added that the three players were in a group chat that he created when he arrived in Oklahoma. Westbrook and Durant used that medium to talk about anything about the sports. Since the fallout, the group message has been silent.
In his verified YouTube Page, Kevin Durant congratulated Russell Westbrook admitting the respect he has on his former teammate.
"Huge congrats to Russell Westbrook on MVP..F—in balled out. Gotta respect it!" he wrote.
Since Durant's decision last season, Westbrook admits they have not talked ever since. In an interview with the Thunder player on February, he said: "Hurt? I mean, I'm fine. I'm fine. Honestly. Move forward...There's been many-a-teammates I've had here before that left me, and they're still my brothers. That I still talk to and I don't talk to. Not just Kevin."
Westbrook comments on speaking to Durant
When asked whether they'll ever go back to speaking terms, "I'm not sure. It's not really up to me, honestly," he replied. Despite the news that the former duo has patched things up, Westbrook was recently spotted wearing a shirt that said: "adopt a cat." The MVP wore the shirt while talking to reporters following the Thunders win against the Melbourne United.
Everyone who saw the interview said, he might be sending a subtle message about his former teammate, Kevin Durant.
Why did fans think Westbrook's shirt is about Durant? It stemmed from the latter's previous controversial Twitter post that seems to answer why he left the Thunders. "His roster wasn't that good; it was just him and Russ. Imagine taking Russ off that team, see how bad they were. KD can't win a championship with those cats," the post said.
Kevin Durant has since apologized for the gaffe, but it looks like Westbrook hasn't moved on from that.
