Despite their sturdy build, wrestlers could be romantic too. WWE Champion John Cena proved it on Sunday when he proposed marriage to fellow wrestler Nikki Bella.
Emotional speech
After Cena and Bella had beaten The Mix and Marse in a tag team fight at WrestleMania 33, he fell down on one knee and asked the hand of Bella in marriage, The Telegraph reported. In an emotional speech, he told Bella it is what she wanted more than a year ago.
“You broke your neck and did everything you could to come back because you wanted a WrestleMania moment. I’m so proud of you,” Cena said.
He recalled that before Bella’s surgery, there were times she was a little loopy, and he could have used those moments to ask her to marry him, Daily Mail reported.
He added that if she said “yes” then, Bella would not remember what she said. For the next 18 months, she kept asking Cena when they would marry. “I promised I would tell you when the time is right. The time is right,” he said. Of course, after Cena showed her a diamond ring, Bella said “yes, ” and she kissed her future husband.
Rumors of engagement
The couple was hit by engagement speculations in late January that John Cena would propose to Nikki Bella, his longtime girlfriend, at WrestleMania 33. The match was held in Orlando. Rumors of the engagement ahead of the April 2 event created publicity for the match which drew a 70,000 crowd to watch the fight and the engagement.
Bella has changed the outlook of Cena when it comes to marriage because he previously said in “Total Divas” that he does not want to get married and have children. However, Bella has the opposite standpoint, and his love for her prevailed in the end.
Positive news
The marriage proposal of Cena to Bella is a whiff of fresh air just more than a week after the WWE was hit by sex tape scandals that involved several of its female wrestlers.
X-rated photos of Maria, Paige, Kaitlyn, Summer Rae and Melina Perez spread on social media.
The scandals were a good test of how the male wrestlers could be tough in another way other than on the octagon ring. In the case of Paige, Saraya-Jade Bevis in real life, her wrestler boyfriend Alberto Del Rio skipped WrestleMania’s WrestleCon also held in Orlando, Florida, to help Paige cope with the traumatic experience.
