Los Angeles Lakers' president of basketball operations, magic johnson, has made it clear that the organization will pursue a superstar this summer. He believes that he should continue the tradition of always having a superstar on the team to succeed the previous legends that wore Purple and Gold. With Johnson’s interest in adding superstar talent brewing, it’s time to look at the possible stars the Lakers could possibly snag.

Gordon Hayward

Gordon Hayward has a player option on his contract, which he is expected to decline to earn a larger deal. He may be a far-fetched option for the Lakers, but they should nonetheless join the Boston Celtics and try to pry him away from the Utah Jazz. Of course, Hayward’s decision will completely be based on Utah’s playoffs success. So far the Jazz seems to be in good position to make a strong playoff run, which will entice Hayward enough to stay. Either way, it would be wise for the Lakers to make attempts at the one-time All-Star.

Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler still has two years and a player option remaining on his contract, so the Lakers would have to execute a trade to land him.

The Lakers have shown mild interest in the Chicago Bulls star before and would inquire Chicago about the availability of the young superstar in the offseason. After all, weeks ago rumors surfaced that the Bulls were prepared to trade Butler in the offseason especially since the team has been unable to succeed. The team’s playoffs success will ultimately be the final determining factor.

Blake Griffin

Blake Griffin is expected to decline his player option to become an unrestricted free agent. Once a free agent, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics would be his top two preferred destinations. Griffin would love to remain in L.A. for business matters, giving the Lakers the upper hand. However, the Lakers haven’t shown extreme interest in the five-time All-Star yet.

But, believe me, if Griffin gave clear indications that he wants to be a Laker, Magic Johnson and company would not hesitate to sign him.

Paul George

Just like Jimmy Butler, the Lakers would have to complete a trade to acquire Paul George. The 26-year-old L.A. native also has the Lakers on his list if things don’t pan out in Indiana. As a matter of fact, it has been reported that George will more than likely sign with Los Angeles in the summer of 2018 if the Pacers don’t become a championship caliber team next season. However, if George strongly indicates that he wants out of Indiana this summer, the Pacers will probably grant his wishes and trade him instead of losing him in free agency.
