On Monday night, the 70th annual Emmy’s took place. There were 21 total nominations for “Game of Thrones,” tied with “Saturday Night Live” and they did not disappoint. Shows like HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and Amazon’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won big at Monday night’s awards show.
There were also many other surprises during the telecast, as well. “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost both hosted the show together.
This year’s Emmys had the theme of diversity as many more black actors were nominated than last year’s, according to The New York Times.
Famous actor wins Emmy after 40 years
Henry Winkler, known for playing The Fonz on Happy Days, finally won an Emmy for the best supporting actor for HBO’s “Barry.” According to The New York Times, Winkler was first nominated for his role as Arthur Fonzarelli, in 1976, who exemplified midcentury American cool in a black leather jacket, on “Happy Days.”
Popular Amazon series wins big
Amazon’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won the majority of their nominations, including one for the best lead actress for a comedy for Rachel Brosnahan.
According to The New York Times, the show won 4 other awards, as well. It also won for writing, directing, best comedy and best supporting actress for Alex Borstein (Family Guy). Tony Shalhoub was nominated for the best supporting actor for a comedy but did not win the award.
No surprise in variety and reality show categories
According to NPR, popular variety shows like “Saturday Night Live,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won in their respective categories. As there are new winners in the other categories, these shows always win their respective awards as expected.
Popular shows win again
As expected, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” wins big at this year’s Emmy’s. Peter Dinklage, one of the highest paid actors in the show, who plays Tyrian Lannister, was nominated for best actor for a drama, with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaimie Lannister, also nominated in the same category.
The show also wins for the biggest award of the night for best drama series.
HBO’s “Westworld” won for best supporting actress for Thandie Newton, who plays Maeve on the show. According to The New York Times, after she received her award, she said: “I don’t even believe in God, but I’m gonna thank her tonight.” She also joked that “The only white people that thank Jesus are Republicans and ex-crackheads” eluding to the theme of diversity at this year’s award show.
