This week, The Weeknd dropped a surprise new EP titled "My Dear Melancholy" and almost immediately fans started analyzing each song, so it did not take long for fans to assume that his song "Call Out My Name" was about his most recent ex, Selena Gomez. And the song is not just a ballad about their former relationship but also seems to reference Gomez's kidney transplant.

The lyrics state, "I said I didn’t feel nothing baby, but I lied / I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / Til you made up your mind / You just wasted my time."

The lyrics are lies

According to a source at Entertainment Tonight "It’s just a lyric and he knew it would strum up attention and that people would interpret it exactly as they have, but he was never actually going to donate his kidney to Selena.

” And according to Cosmopolitan, the source also said that Gomez would "never ever" have asked him to do such a thing even if they were dating at the time. This surgery was a very big deal and a life or death situation.

The album seems to focus a lot of the singer's past relationships, most likely his relationship with Gomez. But the source at ET said that the couple of ten months were not even as close as the songs make them seem, "The Weeknd was always much more concerned with his career than his relationship. Selena leaned on friends and family.”

This comes as a surprise to most fans who recall the couple often packing on the PDA, going out on many dates and even reportedly moving in together temporarily and talking marriage.

These new harsh emotional lyrics could also be an outcome of Gomez getting back together with Justin Bieber so quickly after her split from The Weeknd.

Analyzing more songs

However, there has also been some speculation that some of the songs refer to The Weeknd's other famous ex girlfriend and supermodel, Bella Hadid. The song "Wasted Time" seems to refer to relationship regrets he has, stating in the lyrics "“Wasted times I spent with someone else / She wasn’t even half of you / You were equestrian, so ride it like a champion." And Hadid is a well known horse rider.

It was also reported that Hadid was very upset when she first found out about The Weeknd and Gomez's romance.

If this was an attention-grabbing scheme, it clearly seems to have worked because the lyrics and his songs have been all the buzz this past week. We may never know what the song truly means but perhaps we can all anticipate a Gomez clap back track.
