"A Wrinkle in Time" opened in theaters on Friday, March 9, 2018. The Disney movie seems to be in a close race with "Black Panther," another Disney movie. The recent movie made $10.2 million at the box office on opening day.
"Black Panther" made $9 million on Friday, but it's in its fourth week. The two Movies weren't made to be in competition with each other, but critics can't help but make a comparison.
Since this is the first weekend for "A Wrinkle In Time" and the fourth weekend for "Black Panther" it might not be fair to compare them since "Black Panther" had an earlier start.
Much in common
Both films have a lot in common because they are two Disney titles with black directors and a black cast. Ava DuVernay's movie is projected to end up with $33 million or more over the three-day weekend. Ryan Coogler's movie is projected to end up with between $36-39 million during the same three-day weekend.
Critics think it is impossible for "A Wrinkle in Time" to catch up with/pass "Black Panther" at the weekend box office over time.
So far, the Marvel movie has already reached the billion dollar mark at the box office worldwide. In just 26 days, it became the 33rd movie to do so.
'A Wrinkle in Time': First weekend
Variety magazine thinks “A Wrinkle in Time” might eventually lose some of its magic and "Black Panther" will continue to keep up the pace. The fantasy movie is based on Madeline L'Engle's 1962 novel about a group of children who travel through time and space to find their missing father.
The cast includes a superb group of actors. They are Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, Mindy Kaling and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The costumes, hair, and makeup are beautiful and look like works of art.
'Black Panther': Fourth weekend
Now in its fourth weekend, Marvel’s “Black Panther” grossed $10 million on Friday and looks to make $40 million-plus this weekend. "Black Panther" is expected to secure the third-highest fourth weekend of all-time. “Avatar” made $50.3 million and is in first place, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made $42.4 million and is in second place.
Needless to say, there are two good movies going on at the same time in theaters. It might be hard to choose between both of them, but there is good news. People don't have to choose. They can go to see both. While some of the themes are the same, there are other things about the movies that are different and that will appeal to audiences.
