The "Dancing With The Stars: Live! Light Up the Night" tour bus was involved in a deadly vehicle pileup on a snow-covered road in Ames, Iowa around noon on Monday, February 5. Before you read further, know that all members of the cast and crew are fine even though some of them are recovering from minor injuries. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about others in the pileup that included at least 70 vehicles on 1-35, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

What happened?

State patrol confirmed that the crash left one driver dead and five others critically injured.

On Tuesday, the victim killed was identified as Dana Easter, 53, of Independence, Missouri. Officials said the accident was caused by drivers trying to enter the freeway and sliding into accidents that were already there. After the collision, the southbound lanes on Interstate 35 were closed because of the pileup. The northbound lane was left open for emergency vehicles to get to the injured and those who were stranded. Other roads in the area were also closed because of dangerous conditions.

The accident on I-35 was the largest crash in the state even though the State Patrol responded to 185 crashes on Monday. A total of seven people were killed during the day, including a 17-year-old girl and her 13-year-old sister.

A total of 10 people were injured in all the accidents in the area that were caused by the snowstorm.

Officials of the Story County Sheriff’s Department indicated that the crash is the worst they have ever seen. Records show that Des Moines has not seen that much snow since it had more than three inches on December 28, 2015.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig said the collision that was caused by the seven inches of snow on Monday was just a mess. He added that it is hard getting people to slow down or to stay off the road when that much snow is on it. Needless to say, many delays and cancellations took place, including those at the Des Moines International Airport.
