We are still in the dark when it comes to the release of "Rick and Morty” Season 4, although the long-standing speculation is that the show returns in 2018. While few wait for updates about the installment from showrunners Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, others look back at the past season for possible clues. The Season 3 finale may have given us an idea about the return of the show in December.

Mr. Poppybutthole

Mr. Poppybutthole seemingly hinted at a Christmas season return in his farewell message at the end-credits scene. In the video below, he tells viewers that Season 4 does not come out in "like a really long time" and when it does he may already have a "big white Santa Claus beard." Fans took to a Reddit forum to interpret his remark as a hint to the return of the series in December 2018.

Beth's cryptic message

Aside from Mr. Poppybutthole, Beth may have also given a clue to the show's return in early December. One scene in the Season 3 finale shows the Smith family gathered on the table and Beth says, “We’re a real family now. In many ways, things will be like Season 1" (see video below at the 2:53 mark). Her statement may have something to do with the content of the new season. Perhaps we will see more tricks from the Smith family now that they are reunited. However, it is safe to assume that she may have hinted at the Season 4 Release Date. After all, she specifically alluded to the first season, which premiered on December 2, 2013.

Season 4 release date

The show usually follows a 14-month gap between new seasons.

Given this timeline and with the end of Season 3 on October 1, 2017, in mind, then the countdown to the show's return ends in the first week of December 2018. Beth’s words could mean that "Rick and Morty” Season 4 arrives on December 2, 2018. Coincidentally, this date falls on a Sunday, which is when Adult Swim airs new episodes of the series.

Interestingly, Season 1 and Season 4 have something in common too. They have longer episodes compared to seasons 2 and 3. Season 1 has 11 and Harmon assured that Season 4 will have 14 episodes. Regardless, the December 2, 2018, release is pure speculation on my part. The creators have yet to make an official announcement on the release date.

C2E2 convention

Perhaps we will get more details about the installment during the 2018 Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2). According to C2E2’s website, co-creator Justin Roiland is in some of the various panels at the event, which runs from April 6-8. The convention would definitely be a great source of updates on "Rick and Morty" Season 4.
