20th Century Fox has released the first trailer of a new upcoming “X-Men” film - “The New Mutants”. The film is directed by Josh Boone and emphasized that the film is taking a different approach from the material. In the film director’s interview with IGN, he said that “The New Mutants” is a ‘performance-driven horror film’.
The characters
The film features five new mutants who are not as famous as Wolverine, Jean Grey, or Mystique.
They are a group of teenagers who banded together to escape the secret creepy asylum. Mirage or Danielle Moonstar will be played by Blu Hunt. She has the ability to project people’s fears and desires as realistic illusions.
“Game of Thrones" Maisie Williams will play Wolfsbane or Rahne Sinclair, a Mutant who has the ability to transform into a wolf with enhanced senses and reflexes. Cannonball or Samuel Guthrie will be played by “Stranger Things’” Charlie Heaton. Cannonball can generate thermochemical energy and use it to thrust his body through the air and create protective blast fields.
Henry Zaga will be playing Sunspot or Roberto de Costa, which was previously played by Adam Canto in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”.
Sunspot has the ability to absorb solar energy and utilize it in different ways – for flight or enhanced strength and durability.
The fifth mutant is Magik or Illyana Rasputin that will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy. She is also known as the younger sister of Colossus. She has the ability to teleport through time and space. Magik is also a powerful sorceress and is manifested through Soulsword – a sword that disrupts magic spells and beasts.
Joining the teenage mutants is Cecilia Reyes, to be played by Alice Braga. She is also a mutant who can generate protective forcefield, thus increasing her durability. She is also a doctor and surgeon.
Film details
“The New Mutants” is an X-Men spinoff series based on the “New Mutant” comic series.
The story follows five mutants who realize that they are trapped in a government facility. They must face the dangers of their powers – having to save not the world, but themselves.
The film drew inspiration from “The Demon Bear” saga – which is one of the most iconic “New Mutants” storylines. The five mutants are locked in a physical and psychic battle with an evil force (that takes the form of a bear) that killed Mirage’s family and now seeks to kill her as well.
The film is scheduled for release on April 13, 2018.
