Neil Gaiman is certainly on a roll this year. After the successful premiere of the first season of "American Gods", a new film based on the writer's popular short story is set to get a cult following. After all, "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" features Elle Fanning as a rebellious alien who decides to do something different with a human boy.

The adaptations of Gaiman's works certainly have been taking a different spin from the original source material.

Now it looks like the movie, which also stars Nicole Kidman and Alex Sharp, has turned the usual "boy-meets-girl" storyline into an unexpected and exciting turn.

Elle Fanning meets a boy

The UK trailer for "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" opens with a punk named Enn (Alex Sharp) who loves going to concerts with his friends. One night, they decide to crash a party which appears to be filled with strange women. Enn later finds a girl named Zan (Elle Fanning) and they immediately hit it off.

It might seem like a typical "boy-meets-girl" story. However, Zan is actually an alien who is trying to learn more about Earth.

Her relationship with Enn takes on an interesting turn as she discovers more about the planet and the people who live in it.

Regular girls vs. alien girls

Neil Gaiman fans are likely to take one glance at the "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" YouTube trailer and realize that the film is taking a different direction from the short story. After all, the tale has Enn meeting several girls instead of just one. Nevertheless, it is possible that director John Cameron Mitchell decided to focus on one particular concept about the story and worked around it.

Elle Fanning's new movie might be running with the strangest idea about the short story but it isn't the only Neil Gaiman project that is taking liberties with its source material.

Gaiman's upcoming TV series based on his novel with Terry Pratchett is adding a new character to change things up.

'Good Omens' finds an archangel

Gaiman fans were recently thrilled when it was confirmed that David Tennant and Michael Sheen will join the TV series "Good Omens." Tennant will portray the demon Crowley while Sheen is set to play the angel Aziraphale. Now a third character has been cast and is set to play a larger role in the show.

According to Nerdist, Jon Hamm will be joining the cast as the archangel Gabriel. Although the character does show up in the book "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch," the appearance wasn't significant enough to land him a spot in the novel's Dramatis Personae.

However, the TV series will change all that by giving Gabriel a more important role.

The "Good Omens" air date has not yet been announced. Likewise, "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" has yet to be given a release date both in the UK and the US although the film was shown at Cannes this year.
