Tom Hanks has been very upfront about the serious health issues he has been battling and that he is sick because of the terrible things he did to himself. The "Forest Gump" star opened up about his battle with Type 2 Diabetes. He reveals there is no one to blame for his illness but himself, and he has accepted that blame.

Tom Hanks blames poor health on laziness

Hanks claims his reckless living, carefree, and poor diet is why he is in the shape he is in now. He describes his younger self as an "idiot," revealing that he never paid attention to his love for junk food.

“I’m part of the lazy American generation that has blindly kept dancing through the party and now finds ourselves with a malady,” he told Radio Times.

Gaining and losing weight for films

Tom describes the difference between Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1, people are born with, but Type 2 usually comes on later in life for most diagnosed and is mostly due to terrible lifestyle habits. He also admits that the things he has done throughout his film career also played a part. Like a lot of actors and actresses, he gained and lost several pounds for certain film roles.

Tom Hanks is not the only Hollywood celebrity that has put their bodies through this dangerous procedure for their craft.

Actor Josh Brolin, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale have all gained and lost excess weight over the years for films.

Tom claims he has attempted a healthier lifestyle but has found it a tough commitment to stick with. There is a ray of hope according to his doctors, who have told Tom his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis can be reversed.

He just has to stick to a healthy diet, lose some weight, and stick with it. He was first diagnosed in 2013, and soon appeared on David Letterman, openly discussing his health issues.

Now 61, it is more than time that Tom Hanks starts taking his health seriously, were sure he would reach his goal if his wife Rita Wilson and his four children have any say in the matter.

Tom Hanks began his long and successful film career in the 80's. He is best known for his roles in "Splash," "Big," "A League of Their Own," "Forest Gump," "Saving Private Ryan," "Cast Away," and as the voice of that lovable Sheriff Woody in the "Toy Story" films to name a select few.
