Things are about to become deadlier and darker in the Shadow World with the arrival of a new enemy. In the “Shadowhunters” season 3, Jace, Clary and the gang will face a new threat by the name of Lilith. Her arrival spells trouble for our heroes and hints at another major character death.
Who is Lilith?
In Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” novels, which the series is based on, Lilith is a demon whose blood flows through Jonathan Morgenstern. She made a deal with Valentine to have her blood used as an experiment on his son. He injected his wife Jocelyn, who was then pregnant with Jonathan, with her blood.
This is why she called Jonathan her son in the Season 2 finale of the “Shadowhunters.” Lilith appeared after Jonathan summoned her with his dying breath.
Lilith is a great threat to the Shadowhunters
With Valentine dead, the Shadowhunters thought that the worst was over. They could now be relieved with the belief that no more danger would fall on the Shadow World. However, their worries are far from over and it has only gotten worst. Lilith becomes a big threat to our heroes in Season 3. Her powers and wickedness far outweigh Valentine's. After all, she is a greater demon. Her presence especially affects Jace Herondale (Dominic Sherwood).
Jace is in danger in Season 3 of the 'Shadowhunters'
Jace is at the mercy of Lilith because he becomes vulnerable to demonic influence.
This happened because he was reborn. As infants, all Shadowhunters are subject to a protection ritual and it seemed he lost this protection following his resurrection. Fans may remember that in the Season 2 finale, Clary (Katherine McNamara) wished for the angel Raziel to resurrect him. Jace warned her that there would be consequences and it seems his vulnerability makes him Lilith’s target.
The demon now has the power to invade his thoughts and even control him. This puts him at risk of doing terrible things to his friends.
Will we see another major character die?
Series creator Todd Slavkin confirmed that Season 3 closely follows the storyline of Cassandra Clare’s fourth novel, “The City of Fallen Angels.” In this book, Jace is under the control of Lilith.
She uses him to resurrect Jonathan. She also gives Jace nightmares of him murdering Clary. We already saw that Season 2 followed the book “City of Glass” with Jace’s death and resurrection. It now remains to be seen if we will see another major character die. According to Cartermatt, it would be fitting to see this happen by the end of the premiere to set the tone for the season.
Who plays Lilith in the 'Shadowhunters' Season 3?
Slavkin said they have already cast Lilith although he did not reveal who got the part. Word on the street is that “Arrow” star Anna Hopkins will play the demon character. Regardless, Freeform and Slavkin have yet to make the final announcement.
