We will not see Maze when “Lucifer” Season 3 opens, according to co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich. However, when she does appear, she will face a new challenge that involves her relationship with Dr. Linda.
Maze and Dr. Linda’s relationship
Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) and Dr. Linda Martin (Rachel Harris) share a special friendship despite their differences. The psychiatrist is human while Maze is a demon. However, this does not prevent them from treating each other as equals. They do whatever girlfriends do—they drink, they argue, laugh, and have fun.
This is why Maze treasures her friendship with Dr. Linda, not because she considers her as her closest female friend, but because Linda understands her. This is why Maze would do anything for the psychiatrist; even beat the boss who suspended her (see episode 17 in “Lucifer” Season 2).
However, what if someone enters the picture and threatens to take away that friendship? Showrunner Ildy Modrovich revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that in “Lucifer” Season 3, Maze finds herself competing for Dr. Harris’ friendship with a newcomer.
When does this new friendship happen?
Dr. Linda meets this new friend while Maze is away. Modrovich said that in the first part of season 3 Maze has gone bounty hunting.
When she returns she finds out that her best friend has found a new pal in her absence. Of course, Maze does not like it one bit. Drama ensues when she tries to compete with the other person over Linda’s friendship. The showrunner hinted that we might see the worst of the demon. “When she comes back, she’ll find her best friend with this new friend, so she’ll be very, very jealous,” Modrovich said.
It would be interesting to see this other side of Maze in the new season.
What convinced Dr. Linda to find a new friend in “Lucifer” Season 3?
Dr. Linda has been through a lot in the past seasons. She learned that her patient Lucifer Morningstar is the devil himself. She even saw his true face. She got involved in his family issues and almost died because of it (Lucifer’s mother Charlotte nearly killed her because she would not divulge anything from her sessions with her son).
Suffice to say that she also needs someone whom she can confide in or someone willing to listen to her. She realizes that she needs to be the patient for a change. This is probably when she meets this new friend who provides a listening ear in Maze’s absence.
