The pair who both played roles as a vampire, Ian Somerhalder, and Nikki Reed, shared the green carpet together at the 2017 Environmental Media Association Awards, after apologizing through Twitter about Somerhalder’s birth control jokes in a podcast interview.

The couple’s joke about contraceptives disappointed a lot of their fans

Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed’s birth control jokes may have encouraged some people to think that Somerhalder had forced Reed to pregnancy, except, they claim that it was just a joke and nothing else. The couple admitted long before that they are the kind of people who make fun of each other for laughs.

In which a story – before their daughter Bodhi Soleil was born – happened.

The story went on like this (Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast): “Unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn’t realize that I was going to go in her purse and take out her birth control,” said Somerhalder. He later added that there is a 6-minute video of Reed freaking out over this incident.

Fans give their negative feedback on social media

After that, netizens had a series of Twitter opinions. Two of which stated, “So Ian Somerhalder admitted to throwing out his wife’s birth control and recording it. Can we now talk about reproductive abuse?” and “Ian Somerhalder throwing out Nikki Reed’s birth control w/o her permission is disgusting.

Reproductive coercion is a form of abuse.” Articles over the matter also started circling around the net.

Reed was the first to respond on social media saying, “We should talk about these things, but using a funny interview between married [people] & twisting it to perpetuate gossip is irresponsible.” She also gave a long statement about a writer who – according to her – made an irresponsible journalism, adding that she was indeed very open to the idea of starting a family with her husband.

Somerhalder broke his silence on Saturday, along with his wife, to apologize on Twitter. “To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry. That is an extremely serious issue.” The couple added that they never expected the interview to stir such controversy.

Hours after that, they were seen wearing fancy dresses as a happily married couple, attending an environmental event.

Meanwhile, Reed keeps in touch with her former co-star (and co-vampire) Jackson Rathbone as the godmother of his son. We could at least celebrate how these two cast members did not stray away from each other.

Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed welcomed their first born, Bodhi Soleil, on July 25th which is, by the way, a human.
