We now know when we will be able to see the highly anticipated reboot of the "Hellboy" series on the big screen. The film, which is based on the Dark Horse comic book by Mike Mignola, will be released in theatres on January 11th, 2019. Fans have been waiting for a new Hellboy film for a very long time. The last time we saw Hellboy on the big screen was all the way back in 2008 in the Guillermo Del Toro directed film "Hellboy: The Golden Army."

Reboot instead of 'Hellboy 3'

Hellboy made his film debut in the 2004 film "Hellboy," which was also directed by Guillermo Del Toro.

The reboot will star David Harbour as the title character. Harbour is no stranger to supernatural and sci-fi movies and shows. He also plays Police Chief Jim Hopper in the Netflix show "Stranger Things."

Some fans are disappointed the film is getting a reboot. Many would rather see Guillermo Del Toro finish up his trilogy and make a follow up to "The Golden Army." There was speculation that Del Toro wanted a bigger budget and movie producers simply didn't think a larger budget would pay off. Lionsgate is making the new "Hellboy" film with a smaller budget.

Controversy surrounding film

Earlier this month, there was a huge controversy surrounding the new "Hellboy" film. Ed Skrein had been cast to play BPRD agent Ben Daimio, but when he accepted the role he didn't know the character in the comics was Asian.

When he found this out, he dropped out of the role. Since then the character has been recast. Daniel Dae Kim will now be playing Ben Daimio.

Many in Hollywood have applauded Skrein's sensitivity, including Kim himself. Whitewashing, when a white actor is cast as a minority character, has become a problem in Hollywood in recent years.

Films based on anime have been getting a lot of heat for having white actors play Asian characters. "Ghost in the Shell" and Netflix's "Death Note" have been met with critical and financial failure in large part to this insensitivity.

Good release date

An early January release bodes well for the film because at the moment it has very little competition.

The M. Night Shyamalan film "Glass" will be released on January 18, but otherwise the film is opening unopposed. "Hellboy" also stars Deadwood star Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen, Sasha Lane as Alice, and Penelope Mitchell as the old witch Ganeida.
