“Game of Thrones” Season 7 ended with a major cliffhanger as the newly-turned-wight Viserion blew the 8,000-year-old Wall down. Aside from worrying about the White Walkers’ emergence in the North, fans are also distressed with Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Beric Dondarrion’s (Richard Dormer) fates.

To recall, the two seemed to be still high on the wall when it started to crash down. Are they still alive? In an interview with director Jeremy Podeswa and actor Hivju, they talked about the two characters’ futures and if they will still be seen in Game of ThronesSeason 8.

The director’s take on Beric, Tormund’s fates

"I can honestly tell you that I don’t know," Jeremy Podeswa told IGN.

The director explained that he intentionally didn’t want to know Tormund and Beric’s fates.

He then said that executive producers Dan Weiss and David Benioff, along with the other people, will be working on “Game of Thrones” season 8, and they are the ones who sure know what will happen. However, he admitted that they really wanted to have an open ending.

“[It is] open to interpretation,” Podeswa added. He revealed that they purposely didn’t put an end on it and didn't reveal who will survive and who won’t make it next season. But evidently, it didn’t look good for those who were on the Wall.

Hivju talks about characters’ futures

In a separate interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Kristofer Hivju was enthusiastic when he talked about his character’s fate in “Game of Thrones” season 8.

When asked if Tormund Giantsbane is still alive, he said while laughing, “I don't know ... Pretty scary, right?

He continued to say that he “honestly” has no idea what happened to his character. But he did tease that it doesn’t look good for anyone on the Wall. He also revealed that he is not even sure if he will be included in the television show’s next installment.

However, he did mention that he was a “competitive climber” when he was young, so does this mean that he survived the crash?

It really doesn't look good,” he just said.

He neither denied nor confirmed Tormund’s fate when he talked about the cliffhanging ending. He teased that fans would have to wait for two years to see Beric and his character’s future.

He even said that he fully understands David Benioff and Dan Weiss's take in the season finale about their roles, although he wishes that they would have whispered something before the fall happened.

“When the Wall is down, they won't need the Night's Watch or the Free Folk at the Wall anymore,” Hivju hinted.
