When Cersei surprised Jaime with the news that she is pregnant with his baby, we did not immediately believe this to be true. Then we looked back to that time when they made love at the early part of Season 7 and thought she could indeed be with child. However, Cersei has mastered the art of lying that not only viewers but also “Game of Thrones” actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, cast doubt that Jaime is the real father.

Cersei’s pregnancy

Before we speculate if Jaime is indeed the father of Cersei’s unborn child, let us first ask if she is even pregnant.

For all we know, she lied to secure Jaime’s loyalty. Cersei only wants to ensure he stay by her side especially with her children and her father dead and Tyrion serving the enemy.

However, Cersei and Jaime’s parting scene in the Season 7 finale may have confirmed her pregnancy. To recap, after the meeting at the Dragonpit the queen met with her brother who was already planning his journey to the North. She told him about her plans not to send the Lannister army to battle the White Walkers and the Night King. Jaime argued and insisted that he go since he already gave his word to Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen that he will join the fight. Instead of begging him to stay for his safety, Cersei threatened to have Jaime killed if he leaves.

However, he still turned his back on his sister and left. The fact that Cersei let him leave is reason enough to believe that she is carrying a child. She feels that she is not alone anymore, so she allowed Jaime to leave without repercussions.

Jaime as the father of Cersei’s baby

We have reason to believe that Jaime is the father of Cersei’s unborn child.

They made love early in Season 7 when Jaime returned to Kings Landing. Likewise, it is easier to believe that Jaime is the father since he also fathered Cersei’s three children—Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella.

However, like fans, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime Lannister, also doubts that Cersei told the truth about the child’s father.

In an interview with InStyle, the actor admitted that at first when he read the script he believed that Jaime is the father, but now he is not sure anymore. “It might be that she was just playing all of us. When we did it, I definitely believed her. And that, I guess, is what’s important. Jaime believed her,” he said.

Who is the father of Cersei’s unborn child?

A popular theory point at Euron Greyjoy as the father and not Jaime. We learned in the Season 7 finale that she made a deal with Euron about the Golden Company. We did not see their transaction happen. This brings us to wonder what else she and Euron did behind Jaime’s back. It is also worth mentioning that he professed his love for Cersei when he arrived at Kings Landing and vowed to make her his bride. Regardless, we have two more years to wait to find out if this theory is true when “Game of Thrones” Season 8 returns.
