The "Game of Thrones" season 7 finale concluded with a lot of cliffhangers, but it made one thing certain. Jamie Lannister has had enough of his sister/lover Cersei’s attitude. From the looks of it, he abandons her to fight against the Night King. Fans are now wondering what’s next for the character.

They’re finally over

It can be recalled that after agreeing to join forces with the northerners and Daenerys’ army to fight the Night King, Jamie discovered that Cersei conspired with Euron Greyjoy to bring the Golden Company to King’s Landing and prepare for the war for the Iron Throne.

The Golden Company is a group of 10,000 mercenaries who will fight for gold regardless of the cause. Upon accepting a contract, they abide by the motto: "Our word is as good as gold," earning quite a reputation in Essos.

Feeling betrayed that Cersei has been consulting with Euron even though he was the captain of her army, Jamie feels compelled to leave her side and do the honorable thing. In an Esquire interview with Nikolaj Coster Waldau, he shed some light on what his character will be doing as the show heads for the final season.

According to Coster-Waldau, after seven seasons of blindly following his sister because he was in love with her, Jamie has finally found it in himself the courage to do the right thing.

His parting words “I don’t believe you,” also carries a double meaning. The first would be in reference to her ability to have the Mountain kill Jamie and the second is his final disillusionment over her motives and her leadership.

Headed north

Jamie might not have had the best memories of the north after being imprisoned by former King of the North Robb Stark and losing his hand. However, as he rides to join the rest of the living in the ultimate battle against the White Walkers, he will be joining his brother Tyrion, who serves as Daenerys’ hand of the queen, and Brienne of Tarth.

Coster-Waldau said that he isn’t sure if he will be surviving the journey north and hopes that he at least survives Episode 1 of the final season.

He said he also hopes that he doesn’t get turned into a White Walker if or when his character dies. He also said he is optimistic that having a Valyrian steel blade might increase his chances of survival.

“When this fight is over, either the living or the dead will win. This is the right thing to do. In Season One, Tywin said he wanted Jaime to become the man he was meant to be,” Coster-Waldau said about his character. “Clearly this isn't the man Tywin would have wanted him to be, but this is the man that I want him to be. He's doing the right thing—he's joining the fight for humanity.”

Game of Thrones” season 8 begins filming in October. HBO has yet to announce the final season’s release schedule.
