After Jon Snow was saved by his uncle Benjen Stark from a swarm of White Walkers in the last episode of “Game of Thrones” entitled “Beyond the Wall,” fans have been wondering what became of Ned Stark’s youngest brother. While some followers of the show are already mourning his death, there are those who believe that he still has a role to play in the epic war against the Night King.

Benjen Stark is Coldhands

According to a report by Thrillist, fan theories have been raging for years that Benjen is the mysterious character named Coldhands from George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga.

The author has debunked this theory several times in interviews but it seems that “Game of Thrones” showrunners are headed in the opposite direction.

Showrunner D.B. Weiss has once referred to Uncle Benjen as Coldhands. This means that “Game of Thrones” may be adopting the fan theory moving forward.

This was further evidenced in "Game of Thrones" season 6 where Benjen appears before Meera and Bran as they escaped Weirwood Tree Cave after a White Walker attack. In his brief encounter with his nephew, Uncle Benjen tells Bran that he was told by the former Three Eyed Raven that he must protect Bran and Meera. He also shared how he appears to be part human and part wight.

Benjen explained that it was the Children of the Forest who saved him by shoving Dragonglass into his heart after he was attacked by White Walkers.

The Dragonglass prevented him from turning into a wight completely, but it also made him undead like the rest of the Night King’s army.

In the books, the character of Coldhands helped Bran and Meera in their journey before they reached the Three Eyed Raven. While the appearance of Uncle Benjen and Coldhands doesn’t match in the books and in the series, it is believed that showrunners are already attributing Coldhands’ storyline to Benjen.

Uncle Benjen to the rescue

In the last episode, when hope remained bleak for Jon Snow, a mysterious figure saved him from the White Walker that was set to kill him. Jon recognized him as his uncle, but the last that was seen of the character was not promising.

However, fans believe that wights will not be able to kill Benjen because he is already undead.

The fact that “Game of Thrones” did not actually show how he was killed also leaves questions about what happened to him after the attack. It can be recalled that up until season 6, Benjen went missing and was believed to already be dead. It is possible that the same thing could happen now given that Benjen is a ranger of the Night's Watch and knows far more about the White Walker army than any other character on the show.

Fans believe that Uncle Benjen would continue to help his family and the rest of humankind from beyond the wall because of his promise to Bran that he will “continue to fight for the living forever.” Perhaps, Bran would be able to go beyond the wall to see what actually happened to his uncle in the final episode?
