A major character death happens in the “Shadowhunters” Season 2 Episode 18. Photos from Episode 19, titled “Hail And Farewell,” hint at Max Lightwood’s death.
One with the books
Max Lightwood’s (Jack Fulton) death in Episode 19 is in line with the story in Cassandra Clare’s “Mortal Instruments” books. In it, the youngest of the Lightwood siblings died after Sebastian/Jonathan hit his head Sebastian (Will Tudor). It seems this is what happens to the character in the series looking at the trailer for Episode 18, “Awake, Arise, or Be Forever Fallen.”
Why Max Lightwood dies in "Shadowhunters" Season 2
Episode 17, “A Dark Reflection,” ended with Max discovering about Sebastian’s real identity.
He traced the owner of the blond hair that he found at the bottom of Jonathan’s memento box and came face-to-face with Sebastian in Clary’s room. In Episode 18, Max tries to defend himself from the demon but of course, he is no match to the latter’s powers. The trailer shows him lying unconscious on the floor and bleeding from the nose. Isabel discovers his body in Clary’s room.
Photos from Episode 19 seem to confirm Max's death
Photos for “Hail and Farewell” (see video below) shows Clary, Isabel, Jace and Alec at a cemetery. One of the grave sites has fresh flowers and a newly covered ground. Isabel is seen squatting on the ground and she has that mournful mix with anger look on her face. Could the grave belong to her brother Max Lightwood?
Moreover, the San Diego Comic-Con trailer for "Shadowunters" Season 2 shows Isabel vow revenge on someone. “We’ll make them pay for what they did to you. We’re going to make them pay for everything,” she says in the preview below. Is she promising to avenge Max’s death?
EP hints at Max’s death in “Shadowhunters” Season 2
Executive producer Todd Slavkin may have hinted at Max Lightwood’s death in an interview with TV Guide.
He simply referred to Cassandra Clare’s books as a guide for how Season 2 progresses when asked about the young boy’s fate in the season. "Part of it, we were just following the order of the way things happen in the books and as you reach the end of your season, that's where the big climactic moments are,” he said.
Likewise, actress Emeraude Toubia’s (Isabel Lightwood) reaction, when asked about Max during the San Diego Comic-Con, was already a dead giveaway. She reportedly clammed up when she mentioned Max and declined to reveal anything.
