Summer is in full swing, with temperatures rising well above 90-degrees and air conditioners working overtime to keep our homes cool. Over the years, we’ve learned how to stay safe under the sun, especially during peak hours, but we’re not the only ones in danger of Overheating: if it’s hot for you, it’s also hot for your smartphone. Since the release of the 0.67 update, “Pokemon GO" players have reported several cases of their phones overheating. To prevent any damage to our readers’ phones, we’ve put together a shortlist of tips and tricks on how to keep your phone cool during summer time.

Here are some important tips on how to prevent smartphones from overheating while playing “Pokemon GO.”

Do not charge your phone during Gym Battles and Raids

As you are probably aware, charging your smartphone increases its temperature dramatically. As "Pokemon GO" uses Unity for 3D rendering. The combined thermal output of charging, network usage, and rendering 3D imagery can cause phones to reach critical temperatures and shut down.

Turn off non-essential background processes

Shut down any background tasks and apps which utilize background processing for updates. This will improve your Battery Life, reduce CPU usage, and improve the long-term gaming experience.

Stay out of direct sunlight

This one is relatively straightforward.

Direct sunlight will increase your smartphone temperature and make it uncomfortably hot to use. Not to mention that it’s not too healthy for you either.

Limit FPS on Android

"Pokemon GO" trainers with HTC, Samsung, and Huawei phones can limit application rendering performance and lock their frame rate to 30 FPS. Players have reported significant battery life improvements and reduced heat output, with the only downside being reduced visual fidelity.

Additional information

Some "Pokemon GO" rainers saw significant thermal improvements when they removed their protective case, as it kept the heat trapped and reduced the natural cooling properties of their phones. Although cold gel packs indeed work, we’d advise caution while using them. Water condensation can occur on the surface that’s in contact with your phone, and thus water damage can occur.

We suggest using a paper or cotton towel in between. We hope these tips will help you keep your phone cool and running all summer!

This is all the information known so far. Keep enjoying the game, and stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
