Eric Dane has opened up publicly about his ongoing battle with depression. The actor announced earlier this year that he would be taking a much-needed break from filming "The Last Ship" to focus on his mental health and depression.

Eric Dane eager to return to work following depression

Dane, 44, spoke out on Monday's segment of "Today" about his battle with depression stating, "I was dealing with some depression, which was kind of odd to me. I felt very conflicted about it because I didn't feel like I had anything to be depressed about."

However, Eric knew something this time was entirely different for him.

"This just hit me like a truck," he said. He went on to describe how he needed to take time off work, rest and get his feelings back under control.Thankfully, Dane reveals that he is now feeling much more at ease and is ready to return to filming season four "The Last Ship" as Captain Tom Chandler.

Depression is a serious issue, and affects more than 300 million people a year according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms of depression vary for each individual person. and can include issues with sleep, eating, and often lead substance abuse for those who try self -medicating.

Other well-known stars who have openly discussed their battles with depression include actress Kristen Bell, The Rock, Lady Gaga, Owen Wilson, Demi Lovato, Wayne Brady, J.K.

Rowling, and Sheryl Crow. According to doctors, depression is Common. Reports state that one in three people will experience a major depressive episode during their lifetime.

Sadly, a few celebrities have tragically have taken their own lives due to depression and include Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, comedian Robin Williams, 'Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius, NFL star Junior Seau, and Former "Bachelor" star Gia Allemand.

One important thing to remember is you are not alone.

Thankfully for Dane things did not get too out of control. Eric Dane is best known for his television roles on hit shows such as "Charmed" and "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Mark Sloan. Besides having a successful television career Dane is also a successful film star co-starring in hits such as "Marley and Me," "The Basket," and "Open Water 2" to mention a few.

He is currently married to actress Rebecca Gayheart. The couple share two daughters together, Billie, 7, and Georgia.
