“The Flash” Season 4 will definitely see Barry Allen return to Central City as the Scarlet Speedster when the show returns in October. This is what actor Keiynan Lonsdale hinted at when asked if Kid Flash takes over the mantle as the titular character.
Wally West remains as Kid Flash
Kid Flash will not be trading his yellow suit to become the Scarlet Speedster in the upcoming season. Lonsdale said that Wally West still has a lot to learn before he can take over Barry Allen’s role. He has yet to see where his character is headed. “It’s not something that’s on my radar...I feel as though there is so much story to tell and Wally has so much growing to do.
I’d like to see that journey continue, "Lonsdale said in an interview with Newsweek.
What is next for Wally?
Viewers can expect to see Wally West still learn the ropes of being a speedster in “The Flash” Season 4. As what Lonsdale said, his character still has a lot of growing to do as a speedster. It is likely that he also gets time to shine given the disappearance of Barry Allen. He may not be the Scarlet Speedster but he is now the only speedster left in Central City (that is unless Jesse Quick decides to stay on Earth 1).
This could put Wally in a serious position to likely lead the group. If the upcoming season shows Wally as one, then it aligns with the comics, where at one point Kid Flash became the titular hero.
Where is Barry Allen?
Lonsdale’s confirmation that Kid Flash does not take over Barry’s mantle as The Flash confirms the return of the titular character. There is no way that Barry does not return since this would defeat the title of the show. Likewise, Grant Gustin is still attached to the series, so this means he is still playing as the titular hero.
However, his disappearance in the Season 3 Finale brings so many questions. One: when is Barry Allen coming back and two: how long will Kid Flash have to be Central City’s hero before the Scarlet Speedster returns? The casts have so far been mum on details about what happens in “The Flash” Season 4. Fans believe though that the storyline will not remain fixated on Barry’s disappearance.
It is supposedly likely that he returns soon after his stay in the Speed Force.
Barry’s new nemesis
Barry still has to fight the new season's Big Bad, who is not a speedster. Savitar told Barry in Season 3 that he has yet to encounter Clifford DeVoe aka The Thinker. This further confirms that Kid Flash does not become the Scarlet Speedster in “The Flash” Season 4.
