Over the last 24 hours, the one story that has dominated every major news headline has come from Donald Trump firing James Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After confusion seemed apparent as to exactly why Comey was given the boot, Stephen Colbert decided to have a little fun with the issue at hand.

Colbert on Trump

As the 2016 presidential election came to a close, it seemed as if Hillary Clinton would become the first female President of the United States.

Clinton was holding solid leads across the board according to most polls, and it seemed as if the results were fairly predictable. However, with just a few weeks remaining before voters went to the polls, then FBI Director James Comey brought Clinton's email and private server issue back into the spotlight. Despite numerous investigations not finding any credible evidence to link Clinton to illegal activity, Comey's decision to bring the issue up cast further speculation and doubt around her candidacy. Following the election, Democrats and liberals blamed Comey for Clinton's defeat, with many calling for him to be fired.

Fast forward to present day and Comey has been more of an issue for Republicans and Donald Trump as he's been leading the investigation into what role Russia played in the election. As seen during the May 11 edition of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on CBS, host Stephen Colbert made sure to give his thoughts.

Since the news broke that James Comey had been fired by Donald Trump, questions were raised as to why it took place and over the questionable timing. On Wednesday, the White House said that Trump's decision was made after a recommendation from deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. While that may, or may not, have been the case, Trump contradicted that statement during a Thursday interview with NBC's Lester Holt, saying of the firing, "my decision."

"No one seems to know why.

Donald Trump doesn't even seem to know why," Stephen Colbert said, in reference to the reason behind the James Comey firing. After citing that the first reason given to the public was due to Rod Rosenstein's recommendation, stating, "Trump even sent out Mike Pence to repeat that idea."

Colbert's hard shot

"Some people were skeptical that this was the reason," Stephen Colbert said, before adding, "people like Rod Rosenstein, who said, and I'm paraphrasing, 'What? No. Sorry fellas. Not me!'" Colbert then played a clip from Donald Trump's interview with Lester Holt where he said he would have fired James Comey "regardless" of any recommendation. "Totally believable. Trump does have a history of doing whatever he wants "regardless," but hey when you're a star, they let you do it," Colbert said, in reference to comments made during the now infamous Access Hollywood tapes.
