"The X-Files" season 11 has been a bit of a riddle in the past months mainly because the showrunners seemed to be playing hide and seek with regards to the series' developments. The fans of the long-running series have been waiting patiently for any major updates such as cast, air date, plot and other pertinent details. In the last quarter of 2016, the creator of the series himself, Chris Carter, has confirmed that FOX has already given the green light for season 11. As expected, gillian anderson and David Duchovny, who play the roles of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, are still part of the series.

However, a new bunch of characters is also expected to be unveiled as the episodes will be catered to keep up with modern times.

That said, who could be the new members of "The X-Files" season 11 cast? Will this be the final season for one of the TV's longest-running series? Or are the showrunners planning a spinoff?

New branding for new season

According to reports, the showrunners are planning to think outside the box for "The X-Files" season 11. In line with that, it would be logical to come up with brand new adventures for Dana and Fox, which would roughly mean that some episodes will definitely be unlike any other episode in the past.

For a series that has been on-air since 1993, it would be quite a feat for its writers to come up with new and far-flung plot episodes since almost everything supernatural-related could have been covered already.

However, according to series insiders, this is where the new batch of actors and actresses come in. Dana and Fox's role have been too stereotyped in the franchise and will be difficult to sway. The newbies, on the other hand, can be given roles that will add a whole new twist to the series.

'The X-Files: Cold Cases' coming in July 2017

For the diehard fans of the series who can't seem to conceal their excitement for the return of Dana and Fox on the small screen, there's a treat waiting for them in July. However, it can only be considered as a consolation prize or an appetizer, since "The X-Files: Cold Cases" is only an audio drama with the full-cast reprising their roles by lending their voices.

The said audio drama is reportedly a very crucial part of "The X-Files" season 11 because it serves as an explanation or a background why Dana and Fox are back again. Just like the protagonists of the series, friends and foes from the past are also expected to make a reappearance in the upcoming mini-revival.
