Despite questions about Nina Dobrev returning to “The Vampire Diaries” for the final season, there was never any doubt. In a recent interview, Dobrev shared that it was always her intention. She had to say goodbye to the character and the cast and crew on the show. However, the goodbye was very different to the one in season 6, since there is going to be no show to ever return to this time.

Katherine’s storylines were some of Nina Dobrev’s favorite

While Dobrev’s first “TVD” character was Elena, there is a special place in her heart for Katherine. Katherine’s scenes were some of her favorite, mainly due to the ability to dress up. The actress enjoyed going back to the 1400s and dressing up in 1920s gear, having fun with the costumes, including the corset!

But that doesn’t mean Elena Gilbert doesn’t mean anything. The actress went on to say that there is some of Elena in herself – or more like herself in Elena. That certainly made it easier to jump straight back into the character after a two year absence.

There’s a bittersweet ending to 'The Vampire Diaries'

The “TVD series finale will air tonight. Fans already know that Elena will return and this week fans learned how. Yet, there are still many questions over the way it will all come to an end. Dobrev has shared that the ending will be bittersweet. The whole cast and crew have also been nostalgic in the final scenes of the show.

Fans have taken to social media to dissect the “bittersweet” comment. Fans know that one of the main characters is going to die. This sounds like it will be either Damon or Elena. They will temporarily reunite, only for them to lose each other just moments later. Killing off the Salvatore brothers would help to bring the show to a complete end.

This is also the way that both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder would like to see the show end.

“The Vampire Diaries” series finale airs tonight. It will start with an hour-long special for the cast and crew to say goodbye to the fans. Tune in to the CW at 8pm for a full night event.
