Ray DonovanSeason 5 kicks off with a big bang with Abby’s (Paula Malcomson) death in the show’s premiere episode titled “Abby.” With a lot of twist and turn of events, Ray (Live Schreiber) is definitely having a hard time of what just happened.

According to Collider, although the major characters are in new kind of situations, its looks like it is all familiar events. In the premiere episode, Bunchy (Dash Mihok) wants to be a Luchadore, Terry (Eddie Marsan) is confused about his wedding, and Mick (Jon Voight) is writing a screenplay. Also, Natalie James (Lili Simmons) has been introduced and Ray is going to have a new mother figure with Susan Sarandon’s character.

The plan on Abby’s death

The death of Abby in “Ray Donovan” Season 5 Episode 1 is greatly unexpected, thus it leaves fans in a big shock.

The premiere episode returns with a major time jump and a lot of changes in Bridget (Kerris Dorsey) and Conor’s (Devon Bagby) lives. So, viewers have a lot of questions that are left unanswered. With that, in an interview with TV Line, the crime drama series’ executive producer David Hollander talked about the unexpected death of Rey’s wife.

The 49-year-old TV writer revealed that they have been planning for Abby’s death to be done between the show’s fourth and fifth season. “It was a narrative decision,” he told TV Line. She really has to die so they could dig deeper into Ray’s character and tell his best story.

Abby’s big potential and important role

David Hollander also believed that killing off Paula Malcomson’s role will reveal how important her character is, which they have never done before. As this confused a lot of fans, it is a big question if her death would bring out her “true potential” in the show.

“One hundred percent,” the director confirmed.

Ray Donovan” narrative has been created nonlinearly, so she will remain to be seen to lead its story in many ways. “She and Ray share that,” he revealed. Although her role is dead, the 46-year-old star will still be a big part of the television series' entire season. She, too, will stay as a series regular and not a recurring guest star.

"She is absolutely integral to the show this year,” David Hollander added. However, “Ray Donovan” Season 5 will be the last fans are about to see Abby in television series. If the show gets renewed for another chapter, viewers will never get to see a glimpse of her even on flashbacks. “That is very fair to say,” he agreed.
