South Carolina was the scene of a home invasion by an escaped inmate, according to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. Bruce McLaughlin Jr. aged 30 broke into the home of a woman who was home alone by kicking open the door at 3:00 AM. However, the woman was armed and shot him in the head.
Carolina jail escape
The escape from the South Carolina County jail took place on Tuesday, hours after he and a fellow inmate attacked a security guard. Fox news reported that the escape plan took some days in the planning. In fact, the other detainees tried to assist the security staff.
After they were locked in a room, the prisoners broke down a door to set them free. However, after making good their escape, the two escapees fled.
Sheriff Rick Clark said that McLaughlin entered the house and took a knife sharpening tool from the kitchen before making his way to the bedroom. There, the woman who was fully trained in carrying a concealed weapon shot him. It seems the killing was justified as the sheriff explained more in further comments.
Sheriff speaks about the shooting
"This was a big guy. If she hadn't had a weapon there's no telling what would have happened," the sheriff said. "I gave her a big hug. I told her how proud I was of her." He went on to add that this is a very good example of how a weapon in the right hands, used at the right time by someone trained is a good thing.
The alleged criminal is known to the police, having been arrested on a number of previous occasions. The arrests involved alleged drug crimes, shoplifting, and assault of a police officer. At the time of his escape, he was held on charges of first-degree burglary and grand larceny.
Other escapee faces charges
The other accomplice in the jail escape was named as Timothy Dill.
It looks like he may be back inside as he's being charged with escape, kidnapping, assault, and battery. He was also being held on charges of criminally sexually assaulting a minor.
AP reported that the security guards are not terribly seriously injured but suffered bruising. One of them reported a painful back. However, they are both expected to make full recoveries after the incident.
