After Donald Trump was not invited to attend the funeral service for Barbara Bush, the White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump would take his place. As the service kicked off, the president decided to tweet out his thoughts while his wife joined political rivals the Obamas and Clintons during the ceremony.

Trump on Barbara Bush

It's no secret that Donald Trump has not seen eye to eye with the Bush family.

It started during the early days of the 2016 presidential election and the Republican primary where Trump would routinely bash former President George W. Bush for making the decision to invade Iraq. As the debates began, Trump expanded his criticism to include fellow Republican candidate Jeb Bush, who he would go on to mock and label "low energy" for the rest of the election. In response, Barbara Bush surprisingly spoke out against Trump, ripping into him for how he treated women. On Tuesday, the former first lady died at the age of 92 after suffering from congestive heart failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Donald Trump was not given the invite to attend the funeral services, but did sent out a pair of tweets on April 21.

"Today, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family," Trump tweeted, while attaching a photo of her offical White House portrait. "In memory of First Lady Barbara Bush, there is a remembrance display located at her portrait in the Center Hall of the White House."

In a follow-up tweet, Donald Trump confirmed Melania Trump's appearance at the funeral as he made his way to watch the service on television, which showed the first lady smiling and sitting next to former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and both Bill and Hillary Clinton.

"Heading to the Southern White House to watch the Funeral Service for Barbara Bush," he wrote, in reference to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. "First Lady Melania has arrived in Houston to pay our respects. Will be a beautiful day!," Trump concluded on Twitter.

Bush backlash

Within minutes of Donald Trump's tweet about the funeral for Barbara Bush, critics of the commander in chief made sure to hit back.

"The nicest thing you've done in your career is avoid the funeral. The Bush's know that you're not a patriot, that you stole the election & are dividing the country to take it over," one tweet read.

"Oh stfu you know Barbara hated POTUS you lying moron," a Twitter user wrote.

"Stop calling your resort the 'southern White House' you tacky a**hole," another tweet read. "How about you skip golf this weekend and attend the funeral like any real President would do?" an additional tweet stated.

"Why didn’t your worthless tear end go??

More important to play golf I guess. Southern White House??? Southern Money Pit for the American tax payer. You think you are so important," a social media user wrote. "The Bush family didn’t want you there so you have to watch it alone and on TV," a follow-up tweet read.
